Sunday night's victory was a return to winning ways for Cuba in the regional series it used to dominate decades ago. Last year, Cuba returned to the tournament for the first time in over 50 years, but made a fast exit.
This year, Cuba out-hit Mexico 11-4 on the way to the win.
The Cubans took the early lead, scoring a run in the 1st and another in the 2nd. Mexico made it 2-1 in the 5th when Walter Ibarra drove in Joey Meneses.
Mexico scored in 8th to make it 3-2, but was shut down in the 9th.
