After Scherzer came to the Detroit Tigers from the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2009 season; he has become a superstar. He has averaged 203 innings per year over the last five MLB seasons. The most innings he has pitched in a year was 220.1 in 2014. Mad Max leads the majors in strikeouts since 2012 with 723. He won the Cy Young in 2013 to cap off multiple honors.
The 30-year-old rejected a six-year, $144-million extension last spring from the Tigers. Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers general manager said that the club was unlikely to go after the righty.
The deal for Scherzer would be the largest ever awarded to a free-agent pitcher and the largest deal in Nationals history.
